Key takeaways
- A match's corners are the corners of both teams added together; our numbers count the whole match at full time, never a part of it.
- How many corners a match has on average depends on the league: Pro Finder's featured leagues are spread apart.
- Corner data does not exist for every match, and a league shows no corner numbers until enough of its matches have it: until then it is left out, never counted as zero. Every number comes with its number of matches.
What counts as a corner
A corner is awarded when the defending team is the last to touch the ball before it crosses its own goal line without a goal. The attacking team takes a kick from the corner of the pitch.
A match's corners are the corners of both teams added together, whoever wins them. In the examples below, each number is one team's corners.
- 6–5Over 9.5: 11 corners in total
- 4–3Under 9.5: only 7 corners in total
- 9–1Over 9.5: 10 corners in total, nearly all won by one team
- 5–4Under 9.5: 9 corners in total, one short of ten
Corner lines work like goal lines: the number is half a corner below the corners it needs. Over 8.5 corners means nine corners or more in the match, over 9.5 corners ten or more.
Corners are counted for the full match only, at full time: regular time plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs are not in our numbers.

Questions and answers
- How many corners does a football match have on average?
- Season to date, across the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, a match averages 9.7 corners, both teams together. Other leagues sit higher or lower, so this number is one reading of the top five, not a rule.
- Which of the top five European leagues has the most corners per match this season?
- Season to date, Bundesliga: 10.6 corners per match. It is based on at most 72 matches with corner data. The lowest of the five is Ligue 1 with 9.0.

- Not in our numbers. They count the match at full time: regular time plus stoppage time. Corners in extra time and during a penalty shoot-out are not in them.
- Are there corner numbers for part of a match?
- No. Corners are counted for the full match only, so there are no separate numbers for a part of the match. A team's numbers count the corners of both sides in that team's matches.
